Australien Rundreise - Roman Goeppert

The Final Countdownthe very last entry - der wohl letzte Eintrag in das legendäre Tagebuch, in deutsch geschrieben (!)...

My journey has almost come to end now. At the moment I´m just sitting in the plane writing this script while flying first to Hongkong and then back to Frankfurt again where the plane will land after nearly ten months travelling.

Ever since I left Germany on September 11 last year I didn´t regret a single day of my trip. As you might remember I started off with some mates from school: Priska, Elena and Thilo. We had a great time together exploring Australia and a whole lot of fun travelling up the eastcoast and then we carried on to Perth on the westcoast, Melbourne and eventually Sydney. This is where they left me in early February this year and I got stuck in Sydney so I decided to extend my trip

My own journey brought me to New Zealand where I stayed longer than initially intended ( in the end it was six instead of four weeks) and this was only on the South Island (!). Scenerywise this country surprised me most since the landscape there is mostly untouched by humans. It looks as if someone turned back time to an age before mankind....a time when there was only sheep, long before god created men (ok i am getting too phoetic, lol; lets get back to the track)

I love New Zealand and met some great people over there like Tommi from Thailand who I met in Bangkok again and she turned out to be a very good touristguide and interpreter (thanks again!)

Of course I haven´t seen all of New Zealand-the North Island is still on my list but I need to leave something for my next trip This was for sure not the last time in Kiwi-country!!

Before it got too cold in NZ I made my way back to the australian heat in early May. In Brisbane I even attended a real Aussie- wedding which turned out to be very different to German weddings. And I went sailing and snorkelling in the Whitsunday Islands again. Then, finally on the 7th of June my plane left Cairns flying towards Hongkong and then further to the >>Land of the smile<<. THAILAND. After my arrival in Bangkok I was a bit buffled cause I wasn´t accustumed to vast and chaotic cities like this and especially to the traffic which is more chaotic than according to rules. But it didn´t take long for me to get used to it and soon I hired a motorbike, first in Chiang Mai and then in Ko Samui and Ko Phan-gan. After nine months I am so used to the left-traffic now that it might be a problem to drive in Germany again on the righthand side

Thailand´s great and convenient. Whenever you are hungry, go down to the street and there´s plenty of food-vendors to choose from. I will miss the Thaifood. I love it!! In fact it is so great that I only went two times to Mac (that was when I couldn´t resist the longing for fast food which is by the way less than half the price than in Germany and Thaifood´s even cheaper than that). What I also appreciated in Thailand is the fact that I didn´t have to cook myself. Food´s so inexpensive that you don´t need to. Why cooking when Thais can do it better and cheaper???Whether fried noodles with chicken, rice with fresh prawns or Pad-thai and the fresh sweet pineapple was always a must for desert! Eighter way- you didn´t spend more than 80 cent for a good meal. Jealous??

Thailand is simple and that´s what makes it so special. It´s easy to get around, everyone´s laid back and friendly, not as stubborn as most of the Germans.Only conversation with Thais could be hard sometimes since not many of these small people can speak English. But if they couldn´t talk to you they gave you a big smile instead. Although it´s low season now there are still heaps of tourists in the country. I´ve met some backpackers from France, Holland and a young couple from Florida. The weather was mostly fine, too. Apart from the daily showers in Chiang Mai due to the rainseason in the north. But therefore accommodation was much cheaper than in highseason.

In Thailand I spent almost a month now which turned out to be not enough. It needs more time for this awesome country and I regretted a bit not to come here earlier since it´s so much cheaper than Australia. This time was certainly not the last time for me- I will visit Thailand again some time, thats for sure.

This trip is finished now. A trip full of new experiences, friendships and lots of fun. The memories will last for a lifetime. It was certainly the right decision, I had the time of my life! You don´t get this opportunity very often to take one year off and I am so happy I did it. This diary is a crucial part of my trip. Time rushed by so quickly and with this diary me and everyone else can turn the time back and dream looking at the pictures. It is a brilliant reminder if I cannot quite remember a certain part of my journey. And I want to say thankyou to all the visitors of my page. Thanks for all the comments that encouraged me to keep the site up-to-date. In these 10 months I spent a fortune in internet-cafes uploading picures and writing the blog but I don´t regret the money spent. In fact it was wellworth it considering that more than 5000 (!) people visited my page in less than one years time.

Silvia Spörl in Cleveland / Brisbane deserves the biggest ThankYou since she made it possible for me to create this page. The User Interface of this blog is really simple, uploading pics is a piece of cake.

It´s good to be back home again!

Tue, 03 Jul 2007 20:50:56 +1100Koh Phan-ganjust another small island...
from Koh Samui I took the boat to the neighbour island, Koh Phan-gan. Its much smaller and the nightlife was better on Koh Samui. Its more laid back here. Of course I enjoy the conveniences of a beach bungalow amid palmtrees with the sea in the background.

A few days ago I signed in for a cooking course. In a few hours we cooked four dishes. The entree was Tom-yum soup, then we created two curries. one was phantong curry, a red beef curry and the other one was a green curry with chicken

red curry

and thats the tom-yum. It was yummie indeed:)

and my favourite was fried chicken with cashew nuts.

Looks good, doesnt it.

That was the other chap that did the cooking course with me. Charly from London- what a smile!!!!

Some impressions of the island...

This is Koh Ma, a small island next to Koh Phangan. There was great snorkelling in this bay. But the beaches in Thailand arent nice. Most of the public beaches are dirty-rubbish everywhere. Nothing compared to the beaches i have been to Australia.

Today David Beckham arrived on Koh Samui(where I was last week) and bought himself a nice villa for 200 000 000 Baht (about Eur 4Mio) on samui so apparently he likes thailand as well.

-----

May I introduce Pam, she is a nice thaigirl and lives on Koh Phangan.

She showed me how to carve vegetables. The big flowermotive is made of a watermelon. Its really easy all you need is this special knife and a carrot.

----

Yesterday there was the legendary Full-moon-party on Koh Phan-gan. Wed, 27 Jun 2007 23:21:14 +1100Koh Samui
a paradise on an island...

After a long roadtrip from the very north of Thailand I arrived 5 days ago in the south and went to Koh Samui, an island in the Gulf of Thailand.

The weather here is milder than in the north and it barely rains here so thats good. The island is quite large and I am stayin in a small bungalow on Chaweng Beach since I arrived. Here are most backpackers accommodated since prices are low here.

The color of the water is amazing like in all the brochures from the travel agencies. Sat, 16 Jun 2007 23:44:22 +1100Chiang Maifrom Bangkok to Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand...
On my last day in Bangkok I visited the weekend-market or Jay-jay market. It was huge and you could buy everything you can imagine, even pets...

Traffic is chaotic in Bangkok. No one respects any traffic rules and according to this fact is the traffic situation in the capital.

Then I got away from all the hazzle and smog in Bangkok. I decided to escape the city and started my trip through Thailand. Chiang Mai was my first destination, 10 hours on the nightbus from Bangkok. Its in the northern part of thailand and although its a quite big city it is surrounded by forest and national parks.

At first I had a quick sightseeing trip through the town. I hired a tuk-tuk driver and he drove me around the whole day for as little as 1 Euro. We stopped at some temples

Mon, the tuktuk driver let me drive a bit in his tuktuk...it is beside the taxi the most common public transport in thailand an can accomodate up to 10 people.

Chiang Mai is really nice. It is not as busy as Bangkok and the smog pollution is much less than in the capital. food is cheaper here as well, you can get a main ricedish for about 30 baht which is 60ct....unbelievible in Germany.

Anyway, today I did lot touristic attractions that were outside Chiangmai in the mountain. The tuktuk just made it up the steep hill but only since we changed to a stronger tuktuk that could handle the steep street:)

At first we started off with the monkeyshow...what a big monkey lol

Did you know that monkeys can drive a bike? I didn't until today...

And they can do push-ups as well....

Look at this one

That was the monkey show, very entertaining and funny.

The snake show was next. And thats not just a snake show. There were cobras like the dangerous king-cobra...if you think they are plastic, they are not!!!

What a suicidal man...

He played a while with the cobras and then he showed them around and everyone could touch them. After that he extracted the poison from the 2 poison-fangs (poisonteeth)....and he recommended not to drink it...no beer he said lol

Then he caught the snakes and hold one of them in his mouth

The snakeshow was pretty impressive and afterwards we could walk around and have a look at all the snakes in the cages...there were hundreds of them and sometimes the cage wasnt even closed. Here are the cobras just in a concrete cage with no roof...very safe

The day was not finished yet. It continued with less dangerous animals, elephants!!

The elephant show started at the river where all the elephants had a shower

Then they proved that elephants can play soccer

In the dart game one elephant played against a spectator from the audience and the elephant was much better than the other guy as you can see. Eventually the elephant helped the man by shooting his baloons.

elephants can paint, too

not bad for an elephant. to be honest, I couldnt do it any better:)

bye bye...that was the end of the show and at the same time it started to rain very heavily. It reminded me of the wet season here in Thailand...not the best time to travel but it was the first time since I am here that it rained so heavily. At least the air cools down a little bit afterwards.

I will stay here in Chiang Mai for another couple of days. Tomorrow I will go on a 3day trekking tour in the National Park near Chiang Mai.and then?? I dont know yet, too early for any plans:) but I am heading down south to the islands soon

Take care

Roman

I was quite busy with snorkeling and sailing and got some nice pictures coming up. Theres so many pictures that i have no idea where to begin lol. Ok, lets get started. For all those who are waiting for impressing landscape pictures- you will be disappointed. Since I am here in Cairns I havent done many trips. For those who dont have a clue where Cairns is: its on the top of australias eastcoast.

We only went to Kuranda, a little town in the rainforest. This waterfall is supposed to pour loads of water but its dry season so its a poor picture at the moment but it must be impressing to see that in wetseason.

Ok, heres the evidence that I actually have been to the waterfall....its me!!!

very tropical...

Oh thats my new home. Believe it or not: I am living on a sailing boat again not the same as the one in Airlie Beach.

The entertainment level on this boat is sligthly better with WLAN Internet, TV and there are 400DVDs waiting if I get bored (which happens not very often)

Oh and there is a cat living on the boat as well. She is 17 years (!!!)old and was bought at the same time the boat was bought so she considers it as her home. This is the reason why I had a fair bit of struggle with her when I moved on the boat because she used the forward cabin (which should be mine for the time being) when she has her afternoon-snooze and gets very annoyed when I disturb her sleeping under the aircon (yeah, we even have aircon on the boat and its right above my bed-fabulous!!)

Heres the gally and a well-fed Roman. Oh I almost forgot to mention Craig. Hes living on the boat as well and the good thing about him is that hes a chef and a quite good one too. His food is just unbelievebly good...you see I am not starving and having a great time at the moment.

Heres the reason why I came to Cairns. And its a she. And she is called Monique. and she was my girlfriend although it didnt last long. so she is now my?? my ex-girlfriend. Remember her?? I've put in a picture last year when I met her first time. That was back in Perth on the westcoast around Chrismas. But as my journey with the other Germans to Melbourne Sydney went on I had to leave her and shes workin in Cairns now for a year so we met here again after 5 months....I didn't want to upload the picture but everyone back home is soooo nosy about what she looks like so I was persuaded. Here she is:

Lol did I mention that the nightlive here in Cairns is really good?? and the girls too. the one in the middle is nathalie from the gold coast and miranda on the right....she is a local just busy giving nathalie a knutschfleck

here she is in action

me and monique after a swim in the lagoon. the beach in cairns is really bad. there is no real beach which is very unusual for australia. However there is a free lagoon on the coastline which is nice.

that was later in the night....

hm dont know why I took so many pictures of Miranda...shes attractive

this is giligans, one of the good clubs in cairns.

arent they cute?

alrighty, thats what im doing at the moment....spending the majority of money for booze cause I dont need to pay rent or anything like that. I am enjoin the last few days here in sunny australia. On thursday so thats in 4 days already....oh no!!! I will leave australia and fly to thailand where i wanna stay a month to have a holiday from my holidays here in downunder lol.

Yeah and then I will come back to old Germany. Will be ten months when I touchdown in Frankfurt. But where did all the time go?? During my trip the time was just rushing I can still remember when we were in Hongkong at the airport waiting for the flight to Brisbane as if it was just yesterday...and now??? most of my trip is over. In the last 9 months I had the best time of my life and didnt regret one day or one dollar spent here. It was just great and I recommend it to anyone. For me its time to start with the more serious things in live. I will start uni when I get back and need to move to another town but I am really looking forward to all that, see all the old faces and freaks again, family and the great taste of our beer!!!

Cheers!

Roman
